Turnpike Expansion

There are several projects under design that all relate to Florida’s Turnpike, the Sawgrass Expressway and the interchange of the 2 roads. These projects are broken into several different projects, but all have concerning impacts on the City of Coconut Creek. The project study for the mainline Turnpike is nearing completion and the City's concerns have not been addressed.

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise held Public Hearings for the Turnpike expansion project for the section from Atlantic to Wiles Road. The project website, www.Turnpike595toWiles.com, has transcripts for the hearings.  It is not too late to submit written comments. A recording of the webinar is available on the project website.  All comments received by October 2, 2023, will be included in the Public Hearing record.

The City still has major concerns that we have submitted to the Turnpike.  Our concerns include:  the Turnpike’s insistence that the road project needs to shift to the west; the need for ten lanes when traffic volumes only warrant an 8 lane cross-section; placement and height of the noise walls; and receipt of the amended plans from the Turnpike. The City will continue to seek commitments from the Turnpike related to these three important issues. City Staff and Commissioners attended the in-person meeting to voice our concerns.

People wishing to submit written or verbal comments/questions may do so at the hearing or may contact the project manager, Jazlyn Heywood, P.E., via email at Jazlyn.Heywood@dot.state.fl.us or by phone at (407) 264-3298.

Landfill (Monarch Hill)

On October 27, 2022, at the Broward County Planning Council  meeting regarding the Land Use Plan Amendment for the expansion of Monarch Hill Landfill, more than thirty Commissioners, staff, and residents spoke on behalf of the concerns of our community.  The Planning Council unanimously voted to recommend denial of the Land Use Plan Amendment application, despite, they said, the application being technically complete. The Planning Council is an advisory board to the Broward County Commission.

The next step will be a public hearing before the Broward County Commission.  Please stay tuned on this page or City social media sites.

If you would like to review the agenda for this meeting, including the backup for this item (PH 4), please view here.

City staff covered this topic in detail at the most recent Ambassador meeting which is available for review here.
